The power of IIoT in the Maintenance of the Future

The Internet of Things (IoT) has changed the way we interact with the world. It concerns exactly what it refers to: the ability to enable certain assets or objects of a permanent Internet connection.

 

Because IoT is so useful, when applied to an industrial context, it gains a new connotation: IIoT – Industrial Internet of Things. It applies, for example, to sensors and NFC technologies that can be installed in the assets. Using sensors to monitor assets, big data and data analytics, artificial intelligence or using of robots to perform routine tasks, are some examples that shows that the digital era is present in the life of many companies.

 

The major advantage of this connection is the role that information systems assume, collecting data in real time to foster decision making. IIoT represents an advance in the ability to predict failures, allowing early action to increase the availability of equipment, optimize its useful life and reduce repair costs.

 

These connectivity technologies are applicable to maintenance activity, more specifically to predictive or preventive maintenance. Predictive maintenance consists in monitoring the activity of the asset, through technologies that measure a set of parameters such as vibration, temperature, pressure or oil consumption, following in real time the wear or degradation of components. The data sent by these systems show the equipment’s operating conditions and its performance.

 

In this way, monitoring through predictive systems allows to know in detail the operation of each asset, establish standards and predict behaviours. This process will be able to reduce costs and improve the quality of the final product.

 

The Internet of Things (IoT) and Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) are starting to gain more and more ground and we are going through a phase in which decision makers are already aware of the needs for change. By measuring a series of parameters associated with components, machines and systems, it is possible to obtain data that help to build models for predicting the condition of assets.
